Re-Launch of Malta Permanent Residence Scheme

06 May 2013

< 1 min read

The Maltese government has announced that it will be re-launching the permanent residence scheme by the end of May. This scheme was suspended by the previous government in December 2010 after a series of abuse on the system.

The Prime Minister announced that a Commissioner for simplification of rules, will be appointed in the coming weeks in an attempt to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy. There have been various reports and complaints stating that there are long queues for the e-residence card and the aim is to eliminate both the queues and the burdensome procedure which is currently in place.

To achieve efficiency and expediency, all related services will be elevated to a government agency as opposed to a department.
