Further to Malta’s ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) on 18th of January 2013, the Merchant Shipping Directorate has announced that the Convention will enter into force on 20th of August 2013.

The Convention has been transposed into Maltese Law through the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour Convention) Rules, 2013 and by virtue of LN 145 of 2013.

The MLC was drafted to safeguard the seafarers’ rights to favourable conditions of work and also to secure economic interests in fair competition for quality shipowners. The MLC has been drafted to become a global instrument known as the “fourth pillar” of the international regulatory regime for superior levels in shipping, complementing the other key Conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
