17th April, 2009 – Malta signed a double taxation avoidance agreement with Jordan, the first between the two countries.

During his visit to Jordan, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg held talks with his counterpart Finance Minister Bassem Salem and Naser Jodeh. The latter accepted Dr Borg’s invitation to visit Malta and is expected to visit the island later this year.

Malta and Jordan also agreed to set up a Business Council between each other.

Dr Borg said that the agreement signed would help reduce unnecessary burdens, facilitating trade between the two countries and increase efforts to combat fiscal evasion. The business council would help strengthen commercial ties with Jordan.

Jordan was the last country that Dr Borg visited during his trip to the Middle East. He also visited and signed agreements with Syria and Lebanon.
