The recent exponential increase in demand for domain names is currently being supplied to a large extent by GoDaddy, which has reportedly registered over 57 million domain names and generated over $1.1 billion in revenues.
It appears that Google is now keen to have a piece of this pie, and has expressed its intention to begin offering name registration services. This move comes just after GoDaddy filed papers to raise $100 million via a share sale.
Whilst this represents an excellent opportunity for Google to upsell their current services, Keith Timimi, chairman of VML Qais, a digital marketing service agency, has expressed his concern that “with their dominance in search, this may get some to worry if Google would use that data to help promote their services more than others”.
Google has revealed that it has teamed up with four firms that specialise in building websites to help businesses create one of their own. The firm moreover said it was working at providing “hosting services from a range of providers, as well as domain management support” to customers.
