EU Nationals Working in Malta

According to a Parliamentary answer by the Maltese Employment Minister Evarist Bartolo, a total of 10,035 EU nationals were working in Malta as at end of December 2013.

According to the information provided, the majority of EU nationals working in Malta come from the United Kingdom (2,074) followed by Italy (1,668) and Bulgaria (859).

In-keeping with the fundamental principle of free movement of workers within the EU, persons holding a passport issued by an EU member state are entitled to reside and work in Malta without restriction. However, EU nationals are still required to obtain both a residence permit and an employment licence issued by the relevant authorities in Malta, which are essentially required for statistical and monitoring purposes.
